The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA), City of Barrie and supporting sponsors are excited about the start of construction at the new Meridian Place, which involves enhancements to the existing Memorial Square as well as the creation of a brand new public venue to be known as Meridian Place.
Construction will involve clearing and leveling of the entire area to manage the significant grade change from Dunlop Street to Simcoe Street. All hard and soft surfaces, infrastructure and trees will be removed. This includes the two large coniferous trees in the square. An arborist has confirmed that neither tree would survive either a ‘build out’ around them or a ‘transplant’ to a new location. Furthermore, because of the urban environment that they are currently in, the
overall health of the trees is poor.
We are looking forward to planting 30 new trees in place of the original conifers that will be strategically placed to ensure optimal long term growth and health of the trees; tree placement will respect both the design esthetics and the function of the new venue – including sight lines and shade provision.« Ground Breaking Ceremony
