We are expanding Memorial Square – the centre of history and remembrance in the City. This enhanced space pays tribute to the our fallen veterans and supports our military heritage; past, present, and future. A partial opening of the new Memorial Square is scheduled for November 2016 to commemorate Remembrance Day and a special Vimy soil patriation ceremony. The anticipated grand opening is expected Spring of 2017.
More Prominent Location
A central tenant to the Memorial Square expansion project, was maintaining the reverence and sanctity of the site and the monument in particular. As a result, the Cenotaph will be relocated to a front and centre position aligned with Owen Street. This will provide flexibility for parade routes, an improved flow of people during memorial events and will allow for greater access to the Cenotaph throughout the year.
Reinforcing The Cenotaph
The Cenotaph was erected in 1922 and after decades of exposure to harsh winters and hot summers, much of the original stone and mortar has been recently repaired. However, while the Cenotaph is being moved to its new, more prominent location within the square, we are going to take the opportunity reinforce the structural integrity of the monument.
10x Larger Footprint
In a day and age where improvements to Cenotaphs and Military Memorials are occurring less frequently, this project will see Memorial Square increase ten times in size to accommodate larger ceremonial procedures. As evidenced by the shear number of people who attended the Remembrance Day Ceremony held here in 2014, increased capacity for memorial events will be a welcome addition.
